What does eavestrough cleaning cost, and when should it be done?

Eavestrough cleaning — gutter cleaning is the same job under the word most companies advertise — is priced by the roofline rather than the size of the house, because repositioning a ladder is the work. The GTA has two windows that matter: late autumn once the leaves are down, and spring before the heavy rain.

Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against. Repairs, guards, roof cleaning and ice dam work are separate tasks — a clearing visit finds them, it does not fix them. How we price

What a clearing visit should cover

The useful visit ends with information as well as clear troughs — most of what it finds is cheaper to fix in October than in February.

The roofline sets the price, not the house

What an operator quotes is how many times a ladder has to be repositioned and how awkward each position is. A bungalow with an unbroken run is quick. A two-storey with dormers, multiple valleys, a garage at a different height and a deck or garden bed under the eaves takes far longer for the same linear footage, because every reposition is slower and some spots need a stabiliser or roof access. Steep pitches and three-storey semis price higher again for exactly the same reason.

Two windows, and they are not interchangeable

Late autumn, after the last leaves are down, is the one that matters most — troughs full going into a GTA winter are the ones that freeze. Spring is the second: winter grit, shingle granules and whatever blew in, cleared before the heavy rain. Houses under mature maples in the older parts of the city often need both, and a few need a third pass in early autumn just for the keys.

Questions

Move-out cleaning questions

The ones this page owns — the rest live on the cleaning page.

Eavestrough or gutter — which is it?

The same thing, and in Canada both words are in use. Eavestrough is the older Canadian term and is searched here marginally more often; gutter cleaning is what most companies advertise. Either will get you the right offers.

How often do they need clearing?

It depends almost entirely on what is overhead. A house under mature maples in an older Toronto neighbourhood usually needs autumn and spring, sometimes a third pass for the keys. A house with nothing near the roofline can go a year or two. If water sheets over the front edge in heavy rain, it is already overdue.

When is the best time?

Late autumn, after the last leaves are down and before the first hard freeze. Spring is the second window. Booking the autumn slot early matters more than for most maintenance tasks, because the whole city wants the same three-week window.

Do guards mean I never have to clear them again?

No — far less often. Guards keep leaves out and let fine grit, shingle granules and seed through, so troughs still silt up slowly. They also have to come off and go back on when someone clears them, which is worth factoring into that visit.

Will clearing them stop my ice dams?

It helps, and it is not the cause. Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic, melting snow that refreezes over the cold overhang; the real fix is insulation and ventilation. A clear trough and a working downspout remove the place water pools and are the cheapest part of the job, which is why they are worth doing first.
