Kinds of fencing
The kinds of fencing people book most. Open one to see what it covers.
Only on Taskly
One post, the whole situation handled
Several jobs bought as one outcome — one Tasker, one price to agree, no coordinating three trades yourself.
Fence and gate, both working
The run installed and the gate hung with hardware that still latches in February — gates are where fences fail, and they are worth specifying rather than assuming.
Post this taskYard sorted before summer
Fence up, the old one taken away, the lawn repaired where the machine ran, and the beds cleared — so the yard is finished rather than a building site with a new fence in it.
Post this taskPool enclosure to code
A pool fence built to the enclosure rules — height, gaps, self-closing and self-latching gate — quoted against the bylaw rather than against a standard boundary fence.
Post this taskShared boundary, agreed first
The line confirmed, the fence and cost split agreed with the neighbour, and only then the job — the version that does not end with a survey pin argument.

Walked while you work
A midday walk on the days the office runs long, with a note on how it went.
Post this task
Flat-pack, standing up
The wardrobe, the desk and the bed frame built and levelled, with the cardboard taken away.
Post this task
The list on the fridge
The shelf that never went up, the door that sticks, the light that flickers — one visit instead of three.
Post this taskWhat to know about fencing
A fence is priced per linear foot and decided by what is under it. The posts are the work: they have to go deep enough or the fence will lean and rack within a couple of years, and that means holes deeper than most people expect. Ground full of fill, clay, tree roots or old buried concrete turns a straightforward dig into an afternoon per post, which is why two quotes for the same run of fence can be so far apart.
A fence on a shared boundary is a conversation before it is a build. Where a fence sits on the property line between two houses, the smoothest version is agreeing the fence, the cost split and the line with your neighbour before anything is ordered. The version that goes wrong is a fence built on assumption and a survey pin found afterwards. If there is any doubt about where the line runs, that is worth resolving first — it is far cheaper than moving a finished fence.
Material sets the maintenance more than the price. Pressure-treated wood costs least up front and wants staining every few years to survive the weather. Cedar costs more and weathers better. Chain link is the cheapest durable option and the honest choice for a back boundary or a dog run. PVC and aluminum cost most and ask for nothing afterwards, which over fifteen years is often the cheaper answer. Iron is its own category and usually a front-yard decision rather than a boundary one.

What an installation usually covers
- Rails and boards, or panels, fixed to the posts
- Gates hung with hardware, latching and swinging clear
- The line walked with you before anything is dug
- Offcuts and packaging removed
Removing an old fence, disposing of it, staining, and repairing lawn where machinery ran are commonly separate lines.
Try nowWhat moves the price
- Linear footage, and how many corners and gates it includes
- Material — chain link, pressure-treated, cedar, PVC, aluminum, iron
- Height, and whether the bylaw allows it where you want it
- What the ground is: clay, fill, roots or buried concrete
- Slope, which means stepping or raking the panels
- Access for a post-hole auger, or whether it has to be dug by hand
- Removing and disposing of an existing fence
Worth asking before you agree
- Have we confirmed the property line, and does the neighbour know?
- Does this height comply with my municipality's bylaw for this yard?
- Is removal and disposal of the old fence in the price?
- What happens if the diggers hit fill, roots or concrete?

Questions
Frequently asked
Answers to what people actually search for.
Who pays for a fence on the property line?
In practice the version that goes smoothly is agreeing the fence, the line and the cost split with your neighbour before anything is ordered. If either of you is unsure where the line actually runs, resolve that first — it costs far less than moving a finished fence.
Wood or vinyl?
Pressure-treated wood costs least up front and wants staining every few years to survive the weather. Cedar costs more and weathers better. PVC and aluminum cost most and ask nothing of you afterwards, which across fifteen years often works out cheaper. Chain link remains the honest answer for a back boundary or a dog run.
