One post, the whole situation handled

Several jobs bought as one outcome — one Tasker, one price to agree, no coordinating three trades yourself.

What to know about locksmith

Two very different jobs share this category. One is an emergency — you are outside your own door at eleven at night — and it is priced accordingly, with call-out and hour of day mattering more than the lock. The other is planned work: rekeying after a purchase, upgrading a deadbolt, fitting a smart lock, or getting a set of keys cut that actually turn. Say which you are posting, because a Tasker pricing a planned job and a Tasker pricing a callout are answering different questions.

Rekeying after a move is the job most people should book and most people skip. When you buy or rent, you have no idea how many keys exist — previous tenants, agents, contractors, a dog walker from two owners ago. Rekeying keeps the hardware and changes the pins so old keys stop working, and it is meaningfully cheaper than replacing the locks. Do the whole house at once and ask to have every exterior door keyed alike; paying twice for the same visit is the common waste here.

Condos are a special case and worth understanding before you book anyone. The unit door lock is usually yours, but the building entry, the garage and the amenity doors run on a fob or restricted-key system that only property management can program or duplicate. A locksmith cannot cut you a building key on a restricted profile no matter how reasonable the request, and the ones who say they can are usually wrong. If your problem is the lobby door, the call is to management first.

Smart locks change the failure modes rather than removing them. They fail on batteries and on connectivity, and the mechanical override is what saves you — so if you fit one, keep a physical key somewhere that is not inside the house. With an older door, the other constraint is the door itself: a smart deadbolt expects a standard bore and backset, and pre-war doors frequently have neither. That is a carpentry problem attached to a lock fitting, and it is worth mentioning in the post.

Before you call anyone for a lockout, check what you already have. Many condo buildings have a concierge who can let you into your own unit with photo ID, at no cost, which is faster than any locksmith at midnight. Some tenancies require the landlord to hold a key. If you own the home and have a spare with a neighbour or in a lockbox, that is the cheapest answer available. A locksmith is the right call when none of those exist — and if you have needed one twice, the job to book in daylight is a keyed-alike rekey plus a properly located spare.

Questions

Frequently asked

Answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Rekey or replace after moving in?

Rekey, in almost every case. It keeps the hardware, changes the pins so old keys stop working, and costs meaningfully less. Do every exterior door in one visit and ask for them keyed alike.

Can a locksmith cut me a new condo fob or building key?

Generally no. Building entry, garage and amenity access run on restricted or programmed systems that only property management controls. Start there.

Are smart locks a good idea?

They change the failure modes rather than removing them — batteries and connectivity instead of a lost key. Keep a physical override key somewhere outside the house, and check your door has a standard bore before you buy.
