What to know about siding and exterior cladding

Siding is what many people mean when they search for cladding, and four boundaries are worth settling before you post, because the wrong one sends you to the wrong trade. The WALL is this page: the material on the face of it, the trim and capping around it, and everything that goes wrong with either. The ROOF plane is not — shingles, flashing, eavestroughs and downpipes are roofing, even though the same crew often does both and the two are very commonly bought together. The OPENINGS are not: a window or a door unit belongs on our windows and doors page, although siding is what gets cut and re-flashed around one. PAINT is not, and this is the one that saves people the most money — if the material is sound and only the colour is tired, that is exterior painting. And anything below grade, where water is coming into a basement, is waterproofing and has nothing to do with the wall above it.

The single most important thing to understand about re-cladding is that it is the only time anybody sees the wall. Under the siding there is sheathing, behind that framing and insulation, and somewhere in there should be a water-resistive barrier that keeps wind-driven rain off the sheathing while still letting the wall dry out. Siding is a rain screen rather than a seal: it is designed to shed most of the water and let the layer behind it handle the rest. Which is exactly why a failure stays invisible for years. Water gets in at a badly flashed window head or a split seam, runs down inside, and the first symptom anybody sees is soft sheathing on the morning the old material comes off. That is not a rare surprise on houses of a certain age, it is the ordinary reason a re-clad price changes. Settle before you accept an offer what happens if rot is found: who decides, how it gets priced, and whether the work pauses while you do.

Then the part that decides the method: the height of the wall. Much of what gets re-clad is a two-storey wall on a house with a neighbour a few feet away, which rules out a lift on a residential street and means ladders, ladder jacks or scaffold, and a crew rather than one person. That is working at height, with its own equipment and its own weather rules, and it is the honest reason a gable end costs more to re-clad than the wall beneath it. A shed, a garage, a porch skirt, or the bottom courses of a wall you can reach standing up is a different proposition entirely and worth naming separately when you post.

This category also covers an interior half that is a completely different purchase, and it is worth separating in your own head. Panelling an interior wall, shiplap on a feature wall, boards over a ceiling that has been patched once too often, and the PVC or acrylic panels that go into a shower instead of tile are all cladding in the taxonomy sense — indoor finishing work with no weather in it at all. If that is what you want, say the room. If it is the outside of the house, send a photograph of the whole elevation from a few steps back plus a close-up of the damage, say how many storeys, say what the existing material is if you know it, and say whether anything has been leaking. An offer written from those five answers tends to survive contact with the wall.

Questions

Frequently asked

Answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Is siding the same thing as cladding?

Close. Siding is the everyday North American word for the outside of a house; cladding is the broader term and also covers interior panelling, shiplap and stone facing, which is why both live in one category here.

Can just the damaged siding be replaced?

Usually yes, and it is much the smaller piece of work. The difficulty is the match rather than the work: colours and profiles get discontinued, and an exact match on a wall that has faded for fifteen years may not exist. Ask whether material can be taken from a hidden elevation instead.

What is behind siding, and why does it matter?

Sheathing, a water-resistive barrier and the framing. Siding sheds most of the water and the barrier handles the rest, so a leak stays hidden until the old material comes off. That is why a re-clad offer should say plainly what happens if wet or rotten sheathing turns up.

Do I need new siding or just exterior painting?

If the material is sound and the colour is tired, painting is the cheaper and better answer, and it is a separate category here. If panels are cracked, brittle, holed, buckled or missing, or anything behind them is wet, paint puts a colour over the problem rather than fixing it.

Who does the eavestroughs — siding or roofing?

Roofing, on our pages, even though siding and eavestrough work are very often bought together. They meet at the fascia and the soffit, so if you are booking the two separately it is worth telling each person that the other is coming.
