Painting is the trade where the quote and the job correlate least, because almost all of the work is preparation and almost none of the marketing is. Two quotes for the same rooms can differ by half, and the difference is nearly always filling, sanding, caulking, priming and masking — the parts you cannot see when it is finished and absolutely can see two winters later. A quote that describes coats but not preparation is quoting a different job from one that describes both.
Interior work runs all year and has its own specifics. In older housing, lead paint is a real possibility under whatever is on the wall now, and sanding it without containment is genuinely hazardous rather than theoretically so. Plaster rather than drywall is common in older homes and takes filling differently. And condo work has its own constraints — restricted hours, and low-VOC products because the unit does not ventilate the way a house does.
The other thing worth understanding is that paint quantity is nearly irrelevant to price and paint QUALITY is not. Materials are a small fraction of a painting bill; labour is almost all of it. Cheaping out on the paint to save a few dollars on a job whose cost is a crew’s time is a false economy that shows up as a second coat needed sooner. Ask what product and what finish, and expect a painter with an opinion about it.
Colour is where projects stall, and the honest advice is to test on the actual wall in the actual light rather than deciding from a chip. A colour chosen under a showroom bulb frequently looks like a different colour once it is up. Most painters will happily put sample patches up as part of the quote — it costs an hour and prevents the repaint that costs a week.

Why are two quotes so different?
Almost always preparation. Filling, sanding, caulking, priming and masking are most of the labour and none of the photographs. A quote that describes coats but not prep is quoting a different job.
My house is from the 1950s. Does that matter?
Yes. Pre-1980 stock may have lead paint under the current layers, and sanding into it needs containment rather than a dust mask. Say the age of the house when you post, and expect the prep to be quoted accordingly.
Does expensive paint actually matter?
More than the quantity does. Materials are a small share of a painting bill and labour is nearly all of it, so saving on product to shave a few dollars off a crew-days job tends to buy an earlier repaint.
Should I pick the colour from a chip?
