What to know about drywall
Sort the boundary first, because four of our own pages sit beside this one and the wrong click costs a week. Drywall owns the BOARD and the JOINT: a hole, a seam that keeps reopening, nail pops down a wall, a stained or sagging ceiling, a wall cut out and re-boarded, and the taping, mudding and sanding that makes any of it disappear. Painting owns the film on top of it, and the rule is simple - if what failed is the paint, that is our painting page; if what failed is the board or the tape underneath, you are in the right place. If the wall is lath and plaster rather than board, the material is different and so is the repair, so say which you have when you post. If water is still arriving, waterproofing or plumbing goes first and this work goes last. If the room itself is the purchase, that is a renovation. And one small patch bundled into a visit that is also fixing a door and a shelf is a handyman task; a room, a ceiling or a whole basement is this one.
Assuming none of that applies, the useful distinction is between a patch and a re-board, because they are priced and scheduled nothing alike. A patch cuts back to sound board and framing, sets a backing, fits a piece, tapes it and blends the compound out far enough that a light across the wall does not find the edge - and the blending is most of the skill and most of the time. A re-board takes the old material off, usually because it is wet, crumbling, cracked across too much of its area, or in the way of something else, and hangs new sheets. A patch is measured in coats and drying time; a re-board is measured in sheets and waste. Both are dusty in a way people underestimate: sanding compound produces a fine dust that travels through a home, so containment, a poly wall over the doorway, floor protection and a proper clean-down are part of the work rather than a courtesy, and in a condo they are usually part of what the corporation requires before it lets the work start.
The category holds more than repair. New board goes up in a finished basement, an addition, a garage conversion or a second suite, where the thickness and type of board across a separation is a Code matter rather than a preference. Water and fire make-good is the same trade with a different beginning - the source stopped, the cavity dried and proven dry with a meter rather than by feel, and only then closed. Skim coating resurfaces a wall that is sound but scarred, which is often the honest answer to a room that has been patched by five different people. And there are six subcategories in here that are not board at all: a built-in wardrobe, refinishing a tub in place, an awning, a balustrade, a sauna or a verandah. Two of them are structural builds that belong with a builder rather than with a taper.
A few things make an offer hold. Photograph the damage with something for scale and a second shot from far enough back to show the whole wall or ceiling. Say the age of the building. Say whether it is a house, a low-rise or a tower, because a tower adds working hours and a dust plan set by the building. Say whether the ceiling is textured. Say whether you want it left ready for paint or painted, and by whom, because that single answer changes the finish level being quoted. And allow for drying: compound goes on in coats, each one has to dry before the next, and a cold or humid basement slows that down - a wall finished properly is usually a two-visit task, and anyone promising one visit on a large area is promising a finish you will see in a year.

What a drywall repair usually covers
- Protecting floors and furniture and sealing the room off from the rest of the home
- Cutting back to sound board and framing, and fitting a backing where there is nothing behind
- New board fitted, screwed and taped
- Compound in coats, each allowed to dry, then sanded and blended past the repair
- A clean-down of the fine dust that sanding puts into the room
Priming and painting are usually quoted separately - say in your post whether you want it left ready for paint or finished.
Try nowWhat moves the price
- A patch, several patches, or a wall taken back to studs and re-boarded
- Ceilings cost more than walls, and a textured ceiling more again
- The finish level you need - a flat wall in a hallway and a wall under raking light are different work
- Whether the building predates 1980 and the material has to be sampled first
- Whether the cavity behind is dry, and whether anything has to be proven dry first
- How much drying time the space allows, which decides whether it is one visit or two
What to settle before you accept an offer
- Is the building pre-1980, and is the compound or ceiling texture being sampled first?
- Is this quoted as a patch or as a re-board?
- How is the room being sealed off, and who cleans the dust down?
- How many coats, and is that one visit or two?
- Does the price include priming, painting, or neither?
- If it is water damage, has the source been fixed and the cavity proven dry?
A guard or railing, a verandah and a sauna are in this category but are not board work - they are structural or licensed builds, quoted differently.

Questions
Frequently asked
Answers to what people actually search for.
Is drywall repair the same as plastering?
No, and the difference is the material in your wall. Drywall is a paper-faced gypsum board screwed to framing and jointed with tape and compound. Lath and plaster is a wet material applied over wood or metal lath and is common in older houses. They crack differently, they patch differently and they take a different set of hands. Say which one you have when you post, or photograph the edge of the damage so the Tasker can tell.
How do I know if my stipple ceiling contains asbestos?
By testing it, not by looking at it. Asbestos was used in textured ceiling finishes and in drywall joint compound in buildings of a certain age, and you cannot tell by eye. A sample goes to a lab and comes back in days. Disturbing material that does contain asbestos is specialist work with its own containment requirements, so the test is what decides whether this is a normal task or a specialist one.
Will the Tasker paint it afterwards?
Only if you agree it in the offer. Many quotes finish at ready-for-paint - the repair sanded, blended and primed - because painting a patch means painting the whole wall or it shows. Decide before you accept which one you are buying, and if you want the room painted, say so in the post so it is priced rather than added at the door.
How long does a drywall repair take?
Longer than the patching. Compound goes on in coats and each coat has to dry before the next, which is usually a day apiece and slower in a cold basement or a humid August. A small repair can be same-day with a fast-setting compound; a wall or a ceiling done properly is normally two visits. Anyone promising a large area in a single visit is promising a finish you will notice in a year.
Why is my ceiling stained, and is this a drywall task?
The stain is drywall; the cause almost never is. A brown ring on a ceiling means water arrived from above - a failed seal in the bathroom over it, a supply line, a roof, or in a stacked home a neighbour's floor. Find and stop the source first, dry the cavity and prove it dry, then close the ceiling. Painting over a stain that is still being fed is the most common wasted repair in this category.
Can a handyman do this instead?
For one small patch inside a visit that is also doing other work, often yes, and that is a reasonable way to buy it. A room, a ceiling, a re-board, a skim coat or anything that will sit under a downlight wants somebody who tapes for a living, because the finish is entirely in the blending. Post what it actually is and the offers will tell you which one you are looking at.
