Kinds of tree removal
The tree removal jobs people book most. Open one to see what it covers and what it costs.
Only on Taskly
One post, the whole situation handled
Several jobs bought as one outcome — one Tasker, one price to agree, no coordinating three trades yourself.
Tree gone, ground level
The tree removed, the stump ground below grade, the chip and debris hauled away and the hole topped and seeded — so the yard is finished rather than left with a stump in it.
Post this taskThe limb over the roof
The overhanging limbs taken back, the deadwood out, and the eavestroughs cleared of everything that came down — the roof-protection version rather than the removal version.
Post this taskBefore you sell
Deadwood out, the crown shaped, the beds under it cleared and mulched — the work that makes a mature tree read as an asset in a listing photograph.
Post this taskAsh tree, dealt with properly
A dead or dying ash assessed and taken down with the technique a brittle tree needs, with the wood and chip removed rather than left stacked.

Local knowledge
Priced for how the GTA actually lives
Four things that change a tree removal quote here, and nowhere else.
Tree bylaws
You may not be allowed to remove it
Toronto and several GTA municipalities protect private trees over a certain trunk diameter, and boulevard trees are not yours at all. Exemptions for dead or hazardous trees usually have to be established, not assumed.
Emerald ash borer
A dead ash is a different job
The borer has killed a great many ash across this region, and a standing dead ash goes brittle quickly — harder and more dangerous to climb and rig than a live tree the same size. Say if yours is one.
Access
What is around the tree sets the price
An open yard with a gate a chipper fits through is straightforward. A tree between two houses, over a garage or near hydro lines is rigged limb by limb, and that can cost several times more for less wood.
After a storm
Emergencies go first, and prices rise
A serious wind or ice event books every crew in the GTA. If nothing is at risk, waiting two weeks buys a better price and better work. If a tree is on a structure or touching a line, call the utility or the city before anyone else.
What a removal usually covers
- The tree taken down, in sections where it cannot be dropped
- Branches chipped and the chip removed
- Trunk wood cut down and hauled away, or left stacked if you want it
- The site raked over and left clear
- The stump cut low, though grinding is usually separate
Stump grinding, permit applications and hauling away large trunk rounds are commonly quoted separately.
Try nowWhat moves the price
- Height and trunk diameter, and the species
- What surrounds it — buildings, fences, hydro lines, a neighbour's yard
- Whether a bucket truck or crane can reach it, or it has to be climbed
- Access for a chipper: gate width, slope and distance to the street
- Whether the tree is alive, or dead and brittle
- Stump grinding, and how deep below grade
- Whether a permit is required and who applies for it
Worth asking before you agree
- Does this tree need a municipal permit, and who is applying?
- Is it actually failing, or can it be pruned instead?
- Are you insured for tree work specifically, and to what limit?
- Is the stump included, and ground to what depth?
- Does the wood and chip leave, or stay on site?
- How will you get equipment in, and does that cross a neighbour's property?

Questions
Frequently asked
GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.
How much does tree removal cost in Toronto?
We do not publish a band for this work. Our pricing engine has rows for cleaning, moving, junk removal, lawn care, plumbing and electrical work — tree work is not one of them, and it varies so much with access and risk that a typed range would mislead more than it helped. Describe what is around the tree and compare real offers.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Toronto?
Possibly. Toronto and several GTA municipalities protect private trees above a certain trunk diameter, and a tree on the city boulevard is not yours to remove at all. There are usually exemptions for dead, dying or hazardous trees, but they generally have to be established rather than assumed. Any arborist working here should raise this before quoting.
Why is a smaller tree more expensive than a bigger one?
Because price follows risk and access, not volume. A big tree in an open yard can be dropped and chipped quickly. A medium one between two houses, over a garage or near hydro has to be dismantled and lowered piece by piece on ropes, which takes a skilled climber far longer for much less wood.
My tree looks dangerous — does it have to come down?
Often not. Crown thinning, deadwooding and structural pruning resolve most of what makes a tree feel threatening, for far less than removal and without losing the shade. A good arborist will tell you when a tree can be kept — removal is genuinely right for a failing tree, an invasive, or roots lifting a foundation or blocking a drain.
Is stump grinding included?
Usually not — it is a different machine and normally a separate line. A removal typically leaves the stump cut low. If you want to plant, pave or lay turf over it, say so when you post so the offers include grinding to a depth that lets you actually do that.
A branch came down in a storm. What now?
If nothing is at risk, it is ordinary work and you will get a better price and better attention a couple of weeks after the event, when every crew in the region is not booked. If a tree is on a structure, a car, or in contact with a hydro line, that is not a job to schedule — call the utility or your municipality first.
