Tree work is priced by risk and access, not by the size of the tree. A large tree in an open back yard with a gate wide enough for a chipper is straightforward. A medium tree between two houses, over a garage, beside power lines or reachable only through a neighbour's property is rigging work — every limb lowered on a rope rather than dropped — and it can cost several times more for less wood. When you post, describe what is around the tree rather than just the tree.
Healthy trees are worth keeping, and a good arborist will say so. Crown thinning, deadwooding and structural pruning can resolve most of what makes a tree feel like a threat — a limb over the roof, a heavy one-sided crown, rubbing branches — for far less than removal and without losing the shade, which matters more each summer. Removal is the right answer for a genuinely failing tree, an invasive species, or one whose roots are lifting a foundation or blocking a drain, and less often than people assume otherwise.
Storm work is a different market. After a serious storm every crew around is booked, prices rise, and the first calls go to genuine emergencies — a tree on a house, on a car, or across a driveway. If a limb has come down and nothing is at risk, you will get a better price and better work two weeks later. If something is on your roof or touching a power line, that is not something to schedule on Taskly, it is a call to the utility or your municipality first.

Why is a smaller tree more expensive than a bigger one?
Because price follows risk and access, not volume. A big tree in an open yard can be dropped and chipped quickly. A medium one between two houses, over a garage or near power lines has to be dismantled and lowered piece by piece on ropes, which takes a skilled climber far longer for much less wood.
My tree looks dangerous — does it have to come down?
Often not. Crown thinning, deadwooding and structural pruning resolve most of what makes a tree feel threatening, for far less than removal and without losing the shade. A good arborist will tell you when a tree can be kept — removal is genuinely right for a failing tree, an invasive, or roots lifting a foundation or blocking a drain.
Is stump grinding included?
Usually not — it is a different machine and normally a separate line. A removal typically leaves the stump cut low. If you want to plant, pave or lay turf over it, say so when you post so the offers include grinding to a depth that lets you actually do that.
A branch came down in a storm. What now?
If nothing is at risk, it is ordinary work and you will get a better price and better attention a couple of weeks after the event, when the crews are not all booked. If a tree is on a structure, a car, or in contact with a power line, that is not something to schedule — call the utility or your municipality first.
