What to know about concrete repair work
The first thing to sort out is which of two very different kinds of work you have. Repairing, patching, cutting or resurfacing existing concrete is defined, visible work with a start and an end. Pouring new structural concrete — a footing, a foundation, a load-bearing slab, a retaining wall holding back soil — is a different trade with engineering behind it, and much of it needs a permit from your municipality. If a wall is holding up a house or holding back a hillside, that is not a Tasker job however small the crack looks, and it is worth being told so plainly before anybody quotes.
Resurfacing is the option most people have not heard of and it is often the right one. A polymer-modified overlay bonds to sound concrete and gives an even new wearing surface without breaking anything out. What it needs is a slab that is structurally intact underneath: if the concrete is cracked right through, moving at the joints, or sitting on a base that has washed out, an overlay cracks again in the same line. Surface scaling and general tiredness are what it fixes; a broken slab is not.
Cutting is its own specialty and the safety detail matters. Saw-cutting an opening for a basement window, a doorway, a drain or a duct means dust that has to be controlled at the source, and it means knowing what is inside the slab before the blade goes in — reinforcing steel, radiant heating loops, a buried service. Anything that involves digging or coring near a service line needs the underground services located first.
After you post, here’s exactly what happens
- 1Offers arriveEach one carries a price and an approach, from verified Taskers only.
- 2Ask before you chooseEquipment, timing, whether they’ve worked in a building like yours.
- 3Accept oneYour payment is held by Taskly. Nothing is paid out yet.
- 4Confirm when it’s doneThe money releases and your receipt arrives by email.
What makes a concrete quote accurate
- Photographs of the damage, taken close and from a few steps back
- Rough dimensions of the area, and how old the concrete is
- Whether cracks go right through or only scar the surface
- Whether any part of it holds back soil or supports something
- Whether a vehicle parks on it, and when it must take weight again
Anything structural, load-bearing or retaining is a permitted job with an engineer behind it, not a repair.

Questions
Frequently asked
Answers to what people actually search for.
Can a cracked driveway be repaired or does it need replacing?
It depends on whether the crack is in the surface or right through. Surface scaling, spalling and hairlines are repairable, and often resurfaceable. Concrete that has cracked through, moves at the joint, or sits on a washed-out base will crack an overlay again in the same line — that one is a replacement.
What is concrete resurfacing, and will it last?
A polymer-modified overlay bonded onto concrete that is still structurally sound, giving an even new wearing surface without breaking anything out. It lasts when the slab beneath it is intact and the preparation is thorough. Over a slab that is broken or moving, it fails along the same line.
Do I need a permit for concrete work?
Not for repairing, patching or resurfacing an existing driveway, walkway or floor. You generally do for structural work — footings, foundations, a load-bearing slab or a retaining wall of any real height — and that work needs the qualified trade and the engineering that goes with it.
