What to know about kitchen renovation

A kitchen renovation is really four tasks booked as one: cabinets, countertops, the trades behind the walls, and the finishing that ties them together. The reason quotes vary so much is that those four are quoted differently by different people — a cabinet company prices boxes and doors, a general contractor prices the whole sequence, and the gap between them is the plumbing, the electrical and the two weeks of coordination nobody wants to own.

The dividing line is the same as in a bathroom: does anything move. Keeping the sink, the range and the fridge in place means the supply, drain, gas and circuits stay where they are, and the job is cabinets, counters and finishes. Moving the sink to an island means running drain and supply through the floor; moving the range means gas and a new vent path; adding a second wall oven or an induction range usually means a new circuit and sometimes a panel that cannot take one. Each of those is a different trade and a different permit question.

Countertop choice sets the schedule more than the budget. Stone is templated after the cabinets are installed and fabricated off-site, which puts a fixed one-to-two-week gap in the middle of the job during which the kitchen has cabinets and no working sink. Laminate and butcher block do not have that gap. Neither approach is wrong, but a quote that does not show you where that pause falls is not a schedule you can plan around, and in a household that cooks it is the part that actually hurts.

If the layout is working, refacing is the honest alternative and it is not a lesser job. Sound cabinet boxes with new doors, drawer fronts, hardware and a new counter give most of the visual change for a fraction of the cost and about a week instead of a month. It is the right answer surprisingly often, and someone who suggests it when it fits is worth more than someone who quotes a full rebuild by default.

Questions

Frequently asked

Answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Is refacing worth it, or should I replace the cabinets?

If the layout works and the boxes are solid, refacing gives most of the visible change for a fraction of the cost and takes about a week rather than a month. Replacement makes sense when the layout is wrong, the boxes are damaged or swollen, or you are moving plumbing anyway and the cabinets have to come out regardless.

How long will I be without a kitchen?

A refacing job is usually about a week. A full renovation is more often four to six weeks of working time, and the countertop gap sits in the middle of it — stone is templated after the cabinets are in, then fabricated off-site, which leaves you with cabinets and no sink for one to two weeks. Ask for the schedule as a sequence, not a single end date.

Can I move the sink to an island?

In a house, usually yes — it means running drain and supply through the floor, which is a real cost but a normal one. In a condo, frequently no: many corporations prohibit relocating plumbing outright. Establish that with the building before you pay anyone to design around it.

Will a new range need electrical work?

An induction or electric range often does, and in older housing the question is whether the panel can carry it at all. It is worth having the panel looked at before the appliance is chosen, not after.
