What do you need done?
What changes the price
A straight swap is a short visit. These are the things that turn it into a longer one, and all of them are cheaper to mention than to discover.
The shut-off valve
The commonest add-on by a distance. An old push valve that will not seat, or one that weeps once it is moved, gets replaced while the water is already off. Small part, short job, and not optional once it leaks.
The flange
The collar the toilet bolts to. A cracked or sunken flange under the old toilet has to be repaired or replaced before anything new can be bolted down, and it is the one discovery that reliably turns a short visit into a long one.
One piece, two piece or wall-hung
A two-piece is the quick one: the tank goes on after the bowl is set. A one-piece is heavier and more awkward to place alone. A wall-hung sits on a carrier frame inside the wall and is a different task entirely.
Taking the old one away
Disposal is a real line rather than a courtesy. A toilet is heavy porcelain, most buildings will not take one in the bin, and a Tasker who is carrying it out needs to know that before they arrive.
Installing a toilet is not always replacing one
Two tasks share a name and almost nothing else. The difference decides who is allowed to do the work.
Replacing one that is already there
Same drain, same spot, same supply. The old one comes out, the new one goes on a fresh seal, and nothing inside the wall or the floor is opened. This is what most of this page is about, and it is the version a Tasker can take on.
What to have ready before you post
- The rough-in: wall to the centre of the floor bolts, measured from the wall and not the baseboard
- A photograph of the base and one of the shut-off valve behind it
- Whether you have already bought the toilet, or want the Tasker to supply it
- One piece, two piece or wall-hung, and the model if you have it
- What the old one is doing: rocking, weeping at the base, running, or simply old
What the visit covers, and what is quoted on top
Usually part of the visit
- Draining and removing the old toilet
- A fresh wax seal and new floor bolts
- Setting the new toilet, level and square, and shimming the floor if it needs it
- Reconnecting the supply line and the shut-off
- Filling, flushing and checking the base for leaks
- Clearing up and taking the packaging away
Quoted on top
- The toilet itself, and the seat if it does not come with one
- A new shut-off valve or supply line where the old one will not hold
- Flange repair or replacement
- Moving the drain, or any work inside the wall or floor
- Subfloor repair where the old toilet has been leaking
- Taking the old toilet to a disposal site
Most of what goes wrong is under the old one
A toilet swap is a short, predictable task right up until the old one comes off the floor, and then it is whatever is underneath. The two things found most often are a shut-off valve that will not seat once it has been moved, and a flange that has cracked or sunk below the level of the tile. Neither is dramatic and neither is expensive on its own, but both have to be dealt with before the new toilet can be bolted down, which is why an offer that reads "supply and install" without mentioning either is an offer with a gap in it. The useful thing a poster can do is photograph the base and the valve before anyone quotes, because both are visible from outside and both change the answer.
